To properly store spices, it's important to consider several factors in order to preserve their freshness, aroma, and potency. Here's what you need to know:

1. Store in airtight containers

Spices should be kept in airtight containers (glass jars, sealed jars) to prevent them from losing their aroma and absorbing moisture, which could spoil them.

2. Avoid direct sunlight

Light can degrade the essential oils in spices, reducing their strength and flavor. It's best to store them in dark places, such as cabinets or drawers.

3. Protect from moisture

Moisture is a critical factor in the deterioration of spices, as it can lead to mold. Therefore, they should be kept in a dry place, away from heat and humidity, such as away from stovetops or sinks.

4. Don’t buy in large quantities

Spices lose their flavor and aroma over time. It's better to buy smaller amounts and replenish them regularly to ensure their freshness.

5. Prefer whole spices

Whole spices (such as cloves, cumin seeds, cinnamon sticks) last much longer than ground spices. You can grind them as needed to preserve their full flavor.

6. Avoid temperature fluctuations

Temperature variations can alter spices. It's best to store them in a room with a consistent temperature (ideally around 68°F / 20°C), away from direct heat sources like sunlight or stoves.

7. Label your jars

To better manage your spices, consider labeling the jars with the purchase date. This will help you know when to replace them, as spices lose their potency over time, even if properly stored.
